Sarah Palins resignation inspires me There are a million times we intuitively know what we should be doing in our careers, but the chatter around us makes us question ourselves. Too much. If I have one regret in my career its that I didnt trust myself more, earlier. Watching Sarah Palin resign from her governor post in Alaska inspires me to be more brave in my own career. Shes running her career in ways I intuitively think we should all be running our careers. And shes reflecting my own experience back to me in a positive way: That breaking new ground is difficult but it pays off. Here are four new career management ideas that Sarah Palins modeling, in an inspiring way, right now: 1. Get out of a job when youre done doing it We know that the old ways of managing a career arent working. But its so scary to try something new. For example, you know you should job hop, but its not what careers used to be. And its scary. People are constantly telling you youll destroy your career if you job hop. But Palin is refusing to waste her time in the Alaska governors office. Who can blame her? Its a lot of small-issue local politics that take away from her establishing big, national-level ideas. Of course quitting a local job is a good idea if you want to run for national office. But most people who run for national office pretend to still be in their local-level office. When McCain announced he paused his presidential campaign to go back to Congress, he was widely mocked, because really, if you are running for President, you cant be in Congress. But for some reason we have been embracing the bullshit value that its more important to stay in your job and perform badly than to admit you want to change jobs. I like that Palin refuses to kowtow to the idea that you have to finish a job just because you started it. There is always someone else who would love the job that youre leaving out of boredom. This is true of Palin, and all of us as well. 2. Ideas matter, not your resume We dont need to elect someone based on their resume because the world changes too fast for experience to be a huge factor. On top of that, the internet makes most information available to everyone, so putting in long hours gathering knowledge is not as valuable anymore. Authority isnt what it used to be its based on what idea you have right now, not what youve done in the past. We should judge people for their ideas, not their experience. I think we know this intuitively, especially young people: At my company, Brazen Careerist, we talk all the time about how your ideas are your resume and you should aim to be known for your online conversation rather than for your resume. If you put a resume online, the older people look better than the younger people. But the resume gives a false sense that older means wiser. Palin knows this, so shes not afraid to break resume rules like leaving a job in the middle, and aiming for a job largely outside of her experience. 3. Careers are built on teams and networks Today Palin announced that shes building a right-of-center coalition. This should not surprise anyone who uses social media to manage their career, because the career of the new millennium is about connections. A resume of experience is only valuable if the experience creates a network of people who genuinely care about you. Building your personal brand only matters if your brand stands for helping people create value in their lives. And online connections are only good if you are able to translate that to an offline life. Palin knows all this instinctively. She is ditching the governors job, which, by nature, is about helping people in Alaska, and she is making herself available to help a wider range of people. So smart. She is campaigning across to help people she respects. And shes building a team, which makes sense because the best way to sidestep the need for experience is with teams. Entrepreneurs overcome their lack of skills by taking on partners. Middle managers overcome their lack of authority in the hierarchy by building internal coalitions. Palin is doing what we should all do: form teams in order to fast-track our lives beyond our limited experience. 4. No one controls your career except you She could do what shes supposed to finish up her job, focus on state-level politics, and talk to the press about ethics problems. But thats not what she wants to do. She isnt complaining that other people are thwarting her. Shes not letting them. So many people complain about being controlled by sexual harassment, unfair treatment, bad bosses, etc. But we each have power to control our own career. We can go where we can do what we want, how we want. We have to take risks to do that, though. We have to believe in ourselves and our own vision for whats best. Palin does this. She does not make it look easy. She makes it look smart, though. And that might be just what we need to inspire the same bravery in our own careers.

Just Google Tiger Woods and youll see what Im talking about.   News, especially in large quantities, outweighs other search results.   In this case, Tigers fan page is beneath the news section.   From the car crash to the voicemails heard around the world, Tigers brand was everywhere from the Jay Leno show to TMZ.   To me, it was just another lesson in being open and honest upfront, rather than apologizing later.   Theres a bigger consideration here though that you might have missed.   Not one of Tigers ten endorsers, such as Nike, tore their contract with him after this scandal.   Tigers clean track record before this event has allowed him to escape some major career obstacles.   If this event happened again, things might change. But Im not a celebrity You might not be a celebrity, but if youre active online, then you are a public figure. More people know about you than youve ever considered because of the networked world in which we live.   From Facebook to Twitter to FourSquare to Friendster ?? , more and more micro-celebrities are appearing and they fall under the a similar scrutiny as larger figures.   The main difference is that mega celebrities will gain more attention when negative publicity hits and you may get a few tweets and blogs posts.   It still matters.   In this day in age EVERYTHING matters because wherever your name or face is cited, your brand can either be built or injured.   It all happens through perception and your private life will soon be documented as behaviors change and more of your connections bring reality to virtual reality. The days of image management consultants are over and gone.   The current state of the world begs for personal brand management.   Every move you make offline may be documented and everything you do online is already documented in your permanent record.   Years from now, your boss might uncover something about you from a simply search for your name on any social network or search engine and decide not to trust you. Perception is more powerful than reality, yet consistency is still significant. For instance, if someone is impressed with your online portfolio and then asks you to do some work for them and its not quality, then youre out of luck.   You have to understand that if you have an identical online and offline brand, it will be more credible and respected.   Also, if your offline brand is stronger, then you can exceed expectations and over deliver on the experience. Personal branding is life now because more and more interactions start online and because your brand is composed (and exposed) of your personal and professional life.   There are no more blind dates and what you do outside of work might be more of who you are inside of work. As I always say: Its what you do that makes you who you are and how you present that to others that makes you memorable. The big question: Can I be myself but have a personal brand? This question comes up a lot for some reason.   I think its because a lot of people dont think of themselves as a brand still.   Also, I think branding can be complicated if an individual has many passions and some of them might be conflicting (modeling and being a financial analyst for example).   Being yourself creates a sense of genuineness that draws people in.   People connect with real people, so if you copy someone it will turn them off.   Your personality is your greatest asset and differentiator because unless someone is trying to impersonate you, they cant become you. As I always say: Be the real you because everyone else is taken and replicas don’t sell for as much. Im seeing a lot of people be themselves online but only to get attention.   Others are themselves but its not professional at all so it hurts their chances to get a job.   So my plea is to be yourself but remember to also be professional so that youre projecting a positive brand image. Forget everything you think you know about how to search for positions and get current with the new process. Grab the latest books, read job search and career blogs, and ask your peers for their advice. For starters, my book “Cut the Crap, Get a Job!” provides insight from the perspective of a hiring manager with 30 years of experience. Don’t just update your résumé and start applying. You need to really think about the next position you are aiming for and how you will align yourself with a career change. Never say, “I was fired.” I just met a man named Ron at a conference, and he was still outspokenly bitter about being let go. He said, “My stupid ex-company gave me the boot.” Bad Ron. Instead, say: “My company reduced headcount,” “my role was eliminated,” or “my company downsized.” Never badmouth your prior boss, company or peers.
